FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Your Tallow Questions Answered

New to tallow? We've got you covered. Here are the most common questions we receive about our grass-fed tallow products.

About Tallow

What is tallow?

Tallow is rendered fat from cattle or lamb. It's been used for thousands of years for cooking, skincare, soap making, and more. Our tallow comes exclusively from grass-fed South African cattle and lamb, making it nutrient-dense and pure.

What's the difference between beef tallow and lamb tallow?

Beef tallow has a mild, neutral flavor and firmer texture. It's perfect for high-heat cooking and makes an excellent all-purpose cooking fat.

Lamb tallow has a slightly richer flavor and softer texture. Some people prefer it for skincare due to its luxurious feel, while others love it for roasting vegetables and potatoes.

Both are equally nutritious - it's simply a matter of personal preference!

Why grass-fed?

Grass-fed tallow is nutritionally superior to grain-fed tallow. It contains:

  • Higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids
  • More conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)
  • Greater amounts of vitamins A, D, E, and K2
  • Better omega-6 to omega-3 ratio

Plus, grass-fed farming is better for the animals, the environment, and supports regenerative agriculture.

Using Tallow for Cooking

What does tallow taste like?

Our grass-fed tallow has a mild, clean taste - not "beefy" or overpowering. Beef tallow is nearly neutral, while lamb tallow has a subtle richness. Neither will make your food taste like meat unless you're cooking meat!

What's the smoke point of tallow?

Tallow has a high smoke point of 200–220°C (392–428°F), making it perfect for:

  • Deep frying
  • Pan frying
  • Roasting at high temperatures
  • Sautéing
  • Grilling

How do I use tallow for cooking?

Use it exactly like you would butter, coconut oil, or any other cooking fat:

  • Frying: Melt in a pan and fry eggs, vegetables, or meat
  • Roasting: Toss vegetables in melted tallow before roasting
  • Baking: Substitute for butter or shortening in recipes (use slightly less tallow than butter)
  • Sautéing: Perfect for stir-fries and sautéed dishes

Can I use tallow for baking?

Absolutely! Tallow makes incredibly flaky pie crusts, biscuits, and pastries. Use it in place of butter or shortening - just use about 20% less tallow than the recipe calls for in butter.

Using Tallow for Skincare

Can I use cooking tallow on my skin?

Yes! Our tallow is food-grade, which means it's pure enough to eat and pure enough for your skin. Many customers use the same jar for both cooking and skincare.

Why use tallow for skincare?

Tallow is remarkably similar to human skin oils (sebum), making it highly biocompatible. It:

  • Absorbs easily without clogging pores
  • Provides deep, lasting moisture
  • Contains vitamins A, D, E, and K for skin health
  • Helps repair the skin barrier
  • Is completely natural with no chemicals or additives

Will tallow clog my pores?

No! Despite being a saturated fat, tallow is non-comedogenic (won't clog pores) for most people. Its fatty acid profile is similar to human sebum, so skin recognizes and absorbs it easily.

How do I use tallow on my skin?

Simple! Scoop a small amount (pea-sized for your face), warm it between your hands, and apply to damp skin. A little goes a long way. Use it as:

  • Daily facial moisturizer
  • Body butter
  • Hand cream
  • Treatment for dry patches, eczema, or irritation
  • Lip balm
  • After-sun care

Does tallow smell?

Our pure tallow has a very mild, clean scent - barely noticeable. It doesn't smell "beefy" or unpleasant. The scent fades quickly after application.

Storage & Shelf Life

How do I store tallow?

Room temperature: Tallow is shelf-stable and can be stored at room temperature (below 25°C) for 12+ months. Keep the lid tightly closed.

Refrigerator: For longer storage or hot climates, refrigerate for 18-24 months.

Freezer: Freeze for 2+ years of storage.

Does tallow need to be refrigerated?

No, tallow is shelf-stable due to its saturated fat content. However, refrigeration extends shelf life, especially in hot South African summers.

What if my tallow melts in summer?

No problem! Tallow can melt and re-solidify many times without losing quality. If it melts during shipping or storage, simply let it cool and solidify again, or refrigerate it. The nutrients and quality remain intact.

How long does tallow last?

Unopened: 12-18 months at room temperature, 24+ months refrigerated

Opened: 12 months at room temperature, 18 months refrigerated

You'll know tallow has gone bad if it smells rancid (sour or off). Properly stored grass-fed tallow rarely goes rancid.

Health & Safety

Is tallow healthy?

Yes! Tallow is rich in:

  • Vitamins A, D, E, and K2
  • Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)
  • Stable saturated fats that don't oxidize at high heat
  • Omega-3 fatty acids (in grass-fed tallow)

It's a traditional fat that humans have thrived on for millennia.

Is tallow better than seed oils?

Tallow is heat-stable and doesn't oxidize like polyunsaturated seed oils (sunflower, canola, etc.). It's also minimally processed and nutrient-dense, unlike industrial seed oils.

Can I use tallow if I have allergies?

Tallow is generally well-tolerated, even by people with dairy or nut allergies. However, if you have a beef or lamb allergy, avoid the corresponding tallow. Always patch test skincare products first.
